When you deploy a kiosk, you want to make the kiosk be accessible to as many people as possible, and you want to construct your kiosks according to the laws in your country.
There is no ADA guideline in existence today that deals specifically with kiosks. The most relevant guideline that exists is that for ATM's and is outlined in section 4.34 of the ADA Standards for Accessible Design. Sections 4.34.2 and 4.34.3 of this guideline specifically address the floor space and reach range requirements for ATM compliance.
All KT kiosks, when located such that a parallel wheelchair approach to the kiosk is possible, can meet the ADA reach and height guidelines for ATM's. (See the Note below for Floor Space Requirements.)
The ADA reach and height specifications are shown in Table 1. to the right.
Look at the first row of dimensions. In this example, the ADA guidelines stipulate that if the reach depth to operable parts of all controls is less than 10 inches (225mm), then the highest point on the structure that requires user interaction must not be greater than 54 inches (1370mm) from the floor.
This is illustrated in Figure 1. to the right: the distance from the floor to the highest point requiring user interaction (top of the touch screen) is 54 inches (1370mm), and the reach depth from the the most forward part of the kiosk to the top of the touch screen is 10 inches (225mm) or less. |
